Ensimmäiset päivät

Saavuin tänne Temucoon siis neljä päivää sitten, neljän lennon ja 46 tunnin matkustamisen jälkeen. Mun lentoreitti oli Helsinki – Lontoo – Sao Paulo – Santiago ja Temuco. Matka meni yllättävän hyvin, paitsi että nukkuminen koneessa ja Santiagon kentällä oli vaikeaa. Olin kuullut huhuja, että Chilessä on tosi kylmä asuntojen sisällä, mutta en ollut ajatellut sen koskevan myös lentokettää, joten en ollut ihan varautunut siihen kylmyyteen.

Ensimmäiset päivät täällä on suurimmaksi osaksi mennyt levähtelyyn. Asun täällä paikallisen pariskunnan Mariluzin ja Nelsonin omakotitalossa, josta he vuokraavat makuuhuoneita turisteille ja myös pitempiaikseen asumiseen. Tällä hetkellä meitä asuu täällä viisi: Mariluz, Nelson, toinen suomalainen harjoittelija Sofia, yksi chileläinen Sebastian ja minä. Myöhemmin tänne on tulossa vielä kaksi suomalaista harjottelija lisää, joten päästään kyllä jakamaan kokemuksiamme täällä keskenämme oikein kunnolla.

Minä poseeraamassa jonkun valloituspatsaan edessä ennen kuin kävin katsomassa mitä patsas esittää..

Espanja täällä on tuntunut vielä näin alkuun todella vaikealta. Paikallinen murre on itsessään melko vaikea, minkä lisäksi paikalliset puhuvat paljon ja todella nopeasti. Toisaalta halusin tehdä työharjoittelun etupäässä oppiakseni paremmin espanjaa, joten sitä täällä kyllä pääsee harjottelemaan. 😄 Täällä on tällä hetkellä kevät meneillään. Päivisin on n. 15 astetta lämmintä ja öisin laskee noin viiteen asteeseen. Öisin saa siis todella pitää patterit täysillä ja pysyä visusti peittojen alla. Lämpimimmät kuukaudet täällä taitaa olla tammi- ja helmikuu, joten eiköhän jo munkin harjoittelun loppupuolella ala olemaan lämmintä! 🌞

Mulla iski täällä nyt jonkinmoinen reissuflunssa, joten en päässyt vielä aloittamaan töitä. Nyt odottelen, että flunssa paranee ja kirjoittelen lisää sitten kunhan työtkin on alkaneet.

So I arrived here in Temuco four days ago, after four flights and 46 hours of travelling. My flight route was Helsinki – London – Sao Paulo – Santiago and Temuco. The trip went surprisingly well, except that sleeping on the plane and at the airport in Santiago was difficult. I had heard rumors that in Chile it is really cold inside the apartments, but I hadn't thought that it also applies to the airport, so I wasn't quite prepared for that coldness.

The first days here I have mostly spent resting. I'm living here in a detached house of a local couple, Mariluzi and Nelson, where they rent bedrooms for tourists and also for longer stays. At the moment there are five of us living here: Mariluz, Nelson, another Finnish intern Sofia, one Chilean guy Sebastian and me. Two more Finnish interns are coming here later, so we will be able to share our experiences here properly.

Spanish here has seemed really difficult so far. The local dialect is quite difficult in itself, in addition to which the locals speak a lot and really fast. On the other hand, my main reason of doing an intership was to learn Spanish better, so that I will be able to practice here a lot. 😄 Here it is spring at the moment. It is around 15 degrees during the day and the temperature drops to around five degrees at night. So at night you really have to keep the heaters on and stay firmly under the blankets. The warmest months here are January and February, so probably it will already be quite warm towards the end of my stay! 🌞

Unfortunately I caught some kind of travel flu, so I wasn't able to start work yet. Now I'm waiting for the flu to pass and I will write more when my internship has also started.

Ajattelin tehdä tällaisen “vanhanaikaisen” blogin, johon kirjoittelisin tapahtumia täältä Chilestä. Ajattelin, että näin olis helppo kertoa kaikille kerralla mitä tänne kuuluu ja samalla tästä jäis itselle kiva muisto reissun jälkeen. Saa siis lukea ja kommentoida, ken haluaa. 😊

Hain opetusministeriön koordinoimaan EDUFI-työharjoitteluun jo keväällä 2021. Tarkoitus oli siis alun perin lähteä jo silloin, mutta lopulta matkaan tuli muutama mutka ja lähtö hieman viivästyi. Nyt lopulta kuitenkin saimme harjoittelun järjestymään ja pääsin matkaan!

Työharjoittelun täällä on tarkoitus kestää kolme kuukautta. Työpaikkani on Universidad Catolica de Temuco, eli Temucon katolinen yliopisto. Siellä tulen avustamaan aluesuunnitteluun ja -kehitykseen liittyvissä projekteissa, joista osaan kertoa enemmän luultavasti töiden alettua. Tällä hetkellä tiedän ainoastaan, että työ voi sisältää sekä kenttä-, että toimistopäiviä ja että työ kuulostaa melko maantiede-painotteiselta. Oon opiskellut vuoden maantiedettä ennen nykyisiä opintojani, joten voi siis olla että pääsen vanhojen asioiden äärelle.

Tässä kartalla näkyy Santiagon eteläpuolella Temuco, jossa asustelen.

Kaupunki jossa asustelen on Temuco, Araucanían alueella. Temuco on melko pieni kaupunki, jossa on noin 200 000 asukasta, mutta kaupungilla on melko kiinnostava historia. Temuco pysyi nimittäin pitkään alkuperäiskansa mapuchejen hallinnassa, ennen kuin sen valloitus alkoi n.1860-luvulla. Kaupungin väestöstä n. 30 % on edelleen mapucheja, mikä on eniten kaikista Chilen kaupungeista. (Keskimäärin Chilessä alkuperäiskansoja on n. 10 % väestöstä) Osa mapucheista asuu kuulemma kaupungissa muiden asukkaiden joukossa ja osa maaseudulla. Alueella on myös mapucheja, jotka eivät puhu ollenkaan espanjaa vaan pelkästään omaa mapudungunin kieltään. 

Araucanían alue on kuulemma Chilen köyhimpiä alueita, johtuen osittain mapuchejen kanssa käydyistä kiistoista. Chile valtiona on kautta aikain kohdellut Mapucheja todella huonosti ja kiistoja ja protesteja on yhä edelleen paljon. Oon opiskellut jonkin verran alkuperäiskansatutkimusta ja opinnoissani myös keskittynyt alkuperäiskansojen asemaan, joten tästä syystä nämä aiheet ja Araucanían alue on todella kiinnostavia mulle. Ehkä pääsen vielä palaamaan näihin aiheisiin harjoittelun edetessä. 😊

Hello!

I thought of making an "old-fashioned" blog, where I would write about events here in Chile. I thought that this way it would be easy to tell everyone at once what's going on here and at the same time I would be left with a nice memory of this trip for myself. So whoever wants, feel free to read and leave comments. 😊

I applied for an EDUFI internship coordinated by the Ministry of Education already in the spring of 2021. The intention was to leave already back then, but in the end there were a few bumps in the road and the departure was delayed. Now, however, we managed to organize the internship and I was able to go!

The internship here is supposed to last for three months. My workplace is called Universidad Catolica de Temuco, Catholic University of Temuco. There I will assist in projects related to regional planning and development, about which I will probably be able to tell you more once the work has started. At the moment, I only know that the work can include both field and office days and that the work sounds quite geography-oriented. I have studied geography for a year before my current studies, so it is possible that I will be getting back to old things.

The city where I live is Temuco, in the Araucanía region. Temuco is a fairly small town with about 200,000 inhabitants, but the town has quite an interesting history. Temuco remained under the control of the indigenous Mapuche people for a long time, until its conquest began in the 1860s. About 30% of the city's population are still Mapuche, which is the highest of all cities in Chile. (In Chile, on average, indigenous peoples make up approx. 10% of the population) It is said that some of the Mapuche live in the city among other residents and some in the countryside. There are also Mapuches in the area who do not speak Spanish at all but only their own Mapudungun language.

The Araucanía region is said to be the poorest region in Chile, due in part to disputes with the Mapuches. Chile as a state has always treated Mapuches really badly and there are still a lot of disputes and protests. I have studied some indigenous studies and in my studies also focused on the situation of indigenous peoples, so for this reason these topics and the Araucanía region are really interesting for me. Maybe I will be able to return to these topics as the training progresses. 😊
